presenilins
Multi-pass transmembrane proteins, PS1 and PS2, found in Golgi. Mutations in genes for PS1 are associated with 25% of early onset Alzheimer\'s disease and altered amyloid b protein S b -amyloid precursor protein) processing. PS1 is a functional homologue of SEL-12, a protein found in Caenorhabditis elegans that facilitates signalling mediated by Notch, and the expression of PS1 seems to be essential for the spatio-temporal expression of Notch1 and Dll1 (Delta-like gene 1) during embryogenesis. PS1 and PS2 are also similar to C. elegans Spe-1, a gene involved in protein trafficking in the Golgi during spermatogenesis.
